COURSE OBJECTIVES
To expose students to a diverse selection of fiction, nonfiction and informational texts as prescribed by the Common Core Learning Standards
To develop and enhance critical thinking skills
To enhance grammar, writing, research, and presentation skills
To create a safe, positive environment conducive to sharing experiences, ideas, and writings
To work collaboratively and effectively on group assignments
To grow and mature as thinkers, learners, and citizens of the world
EXPECTATIONS
You will be required to complete all packets that accompany the lesson for the day. At the end of the class period, you will place your packet inside of your notebooks, where they will be stapled. It is important that these notebooks are neat and organized in chronological order (from the first day of class to the present).
All handwriting should be legible, such that they can be reviewed at any time.
Additionally, you are expected to have all necessary class materials and to contribute to class discussions daily. Participation in discussions allows you to think critically about your work and engage your classmates, which broadens everyone’s perspective.
We give our best daily, and we expect the same from you. If you fail to follow classroom expectations, the following consequences may be issued based on teacher’s discretion:

*Just as we would call home if you are consistently NOT doing your job, we love to call home even more to report you ARE going above and beyond our expectations.

These materials will be provided for you so it will be your responsibility to bring them to class daily.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Completion of at least two project-based assignments per term:
Each project will have a deadline date. Each day the project is late, 10 points will be deducted. Projects are an excellent opportunity to creatively display what you learned in class. Take advantage of this opportunity!
Independent Reading/Journals:
Every week, there will be MANDATORY time where each student is expected to independently read during a period of class time. While there are many reasons for this, one main reason draws from the rationale that our brain function increases and our brains can actually GROW through reading. You will be expected to read for the complete duration of the reading time and to respond to a prompt(s) provided. This should be done every time you read. This grade will be considered mandatory extra credit -- an easy way to boost your grade at the end of the quarter, if done well!
Late Work Policy:
It is extremely important that all work is completed on time. In the event that work is handed in after the due date, points will be taken off. If work is one (1) day late, 15 points will be taken off. On the second (2nd) day, another 15 points will be taken off. On the third (3rd) day, the highest grade that the work can receive is a 55. After the third day, work will no longer be accepted and you will receive a 0 for the assignment.
Exams:
Exams will be given on a regular basis. There will be approximately three (3) exams each term. If you missed an exam, you should be prepared to take the exam on the day you return to school. If you do not take an exam within a given time frame, there will be point reductions in your final grade.

Your grade for this class will be calculated as follows:
Tests: 30%
Classwork: 20%
Quizzes: 15%

You also will receive a work ethic grade, which assesses students’ participation, effort, and preparedness. A strong work ethic will bring up your overall grade!
CLASSROOM ROUTINES AND PROCEDURES
Learning and following classroom procedures allows us to optimize our class time. The following is a list of our classroom routines and procedures:
General Rules
Sit S.T.A.T. (Straight, Track the speaker, Ask and answer questions, Tune in)
Pay attention in class. Respect both the teacher and your classmates when they speak. Give respect to get respect.
Raise a hand to talk in class. Never shout out!
The date is always on the board, and so is the homework.
Correcting your peers when they answer is not your job. That is our job as teachers. We are here to learn, not to be perfect.
When it is your turn to contribute to classroom discussions, use ACCOUNTABLE TALK.
Seats and groups are often changed. You don’t have to like your classmates but you have to be professional and respectful every day. It is expected you will get your job done!
Successful people don’t complain! Set yourself up for success by embracing challenges.
Noise Level
Teachers will let you know the appropriate noise level before any task, and it will be posted on the whiteboard. The four possible noise levels are as follows:
0 = Silence
1 = Whispering to a Neighbor
2 = Conversation Within Your Group
3 = Addressing the Entire Class
Bathroom breaks
You may not use the bathroom during the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes of a class period. During the appropriate time, you may use the bathroom using the following procedure:
Hold up your fist, using the sign language signal for bathroom
After being acknowledged by a teacher, sign out in the Student Logbook
Take the classroom pass before leaving the classroom
Upon returning, put the classroom pass back in its spot and sign back in using the Student Logbook
Only one student is allowed out at a time. The Student Logbook will be monitored daily to ensure students are not staying out longer than necessary.
Water breaks
You may not leave the classroom for water during the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes of a class period. During the appropriate time, you may drink water using the following procedure:
Hold up 3 fingers (making a W)
After being acknowledged by a teacher, sign out in the Student Logbook
Take the classroom pass before leaving the classroom
Upon returning, put the classroom pass back in its spot and sign back in using the Student Logbook
As stated above, only one student is allowed out at a time, and the Student Logbook will be monitored daily to ensure students are not staying out longer than necessary.
Entering the classroom
In the hallways, you must remain at a level 0 (silence). When entering the classroom, you may speak at a Level 1 (whisper) as you are gathering your belongings and getting ready for the day’s lesson:
Reduce your noise level to 1.
Place your school bag on the back of your chair.
Take out your class materials and complete the Do Now.
Throwing away garbage
If you have garbage, hold onto it until the end of class or until you work independently. Time will be set aside for you to throw away any garbage at the end of the period.
Extra help
If you find yourself confused or unsure about a specific topic, please see one of your ELA teachers. We will be more than happy to help you.
Attendance
You are expected to be in class and in your seat on time with all supplies every day. It is your responsibility to see one of your teachers after an absence to retrieve the information you missed and submit all missed assignments. If you are absent, you will have an extra night to complete the class and homework assignments for full credit. If you are absent for an extended period of time, we will work collaboratively to get you caught up.
Exiting the classroom
The teacher will signal when it is time to prepare for dismissal. A class is ready to leave when the following criteria are met:
The desks are straight and chairs are pushed in.
There is no garbage left near your work area.
Personal belongings and classwork are put away.
All assignments/ items due are handed in.
Noise level is at 0.

Objetivos del curso:
Exponer a los estudiantes a diversas selecciones de ficción, historias reales, y textos informativos como lo determinan los estándares de aprendizaje “Common Core”
Para desarrollar y aumentar las destrezas de pensamiento crítico
Para desarrollar las destrezas gramaticales, de escritura, de investigacion, y presentacion.
Crear un ambiente positivo, y que conduzca a los estudiantes a compartir experiencias, ideas, y lo que escriben
Trabajar colaborativamente y efectivamente en asignaturas grupales
Para crecer y desarrollarse como pensadores, aprendices, y ciudadanos mundiales
Expectativas
Es importante y necesario que completes todos los paquetes que acompañan la leccion del dia. Al final del periodo de clase, acomodaras tu paquete de trabajo dentro de tu libreta o cuaderno, donde serán engrapados.
Es importante que los cuadernos estén limpios y organizados y en orden cronológico (del primer día de clase hasta el dia presente).
Toda tu escritura debe ser legible, para que puedan ser evaluadas por la maestra en cualquier momento.
En adición, se espera que tengas todos los materiales necesarios y que contribuyas a las discusiones diarias en clase. Participación en discusiones te ayudan a evaluar y pensar críticamente sobre tu trabajo y involucrar a tus compañeros de clase lo que amplía la perspectiva de todos.
Damos lo mejor cada dia para ustedes, y esperamos lo mismo de nuestros estudiantes. Si fallas en seguir las reglas del salon, las siguientes consecuencias pueden ser distribuidas basado en la discreción de la maestra.

*También como llamamos al hogar si estás sin hacer tus tareas consistentemente, nosotras amamos llamar al hogar para informar a las familias cuando el estudiante está por encima de las expectativas y está trabajando fuerte en el salon.
Estar preparado en clase significa:
Traer los siguientes materiales al aula de clases:
carpeta
Diario de lectura
lapiz / boligrafo
Pañuelo de papel
2 cartapacios
Estos materiales serán proveídos para ti, así que será tu responsabilidad que los traigas a diario para clase.
REQUISITOS DEL CURSO
Completar al menos dos asignaciones basadas en proyectos por trimestre:

Cada proyecto tendrá una fecha determinada de entrega. Por cada dia que el proyecto este tarde, 10 minutos serán reducidos de tu nota. Los proyectos son una oportunidad excelente para mostrar creativamente lo que aprendiste en clase. Toma ventaja de esta oportunidad.
Lectura independiente/ Diarios de lectura
Cada semana, habrá un tiempo obligatorio donde se requiere que cada estudiante lea independientemente durante un periodo de tiempo de clase. Si bien hay muchas razones para esto, una razón principal se basa en la lógica de que nuestra función cerebral aumenta y nuestros cerebros en realidad pueden CRECER mediante la lectura. Se espera que lea durante todo el tiempo de lectura y que responda a una o varias pautas proporcionadas. Esto debe hacerse cada vez que lea. Esta calificación se considerará un crédito adicional obligatorio: una manera fácil de aumentar su calificación al final del trimestre, si se hace bien.
Política de trabajo atrasado:
Es extremadamente importante que todo el trabajo se complete a tiempo. En caso de que el trabajo se entregue después de la fecha de entrega final, se quitarán los puntos. Si el trabajo es un (1) día tarde, se quitarán 15 puntos. En el segundo (2º) día, se quitarán otros 15 puntos. En el tercer (3º) día, el grado más alto que puede recibir el trabajo es un 55. Después del tercer día, el trabajo ya no será aceptado y recibirá un 0 para la tarea.
Exámenes:
Los exámenes se darán de forma regular. Habrá aproximadamente tres (3) exámenes cada término. Si se perdió un examen, debe estar preparado para tomar el examen el día que regrese a la escuela. Si no realiza un examen dentro de un marco de tiempo determinado, habrá reducciones de puntos en su calificación final.
Para estar informado de lo que está sucediendo después en el aula, consulte el sitio web del salón de clases que se actualizará regularmente.

También recibirá una calificación de ética de trabajo, que evalúa la participación, el esfuerzo y la preparación de los estudiantes. ¡Una fuerte ética de trabajo mostrará tu calificación general!
RUTINAS Y PROCEDIMIENTOS DEL AULA
Aprender y seguir los procedimientos del salón de clases nos permite optimizar nuestro tiempo de clase. La siguiente es una lista de nuestras rutinas y procedimientos del salón de clases:
Reglas generales:
Sit S.T.A.T. (Directo, Seguir al que está hablando, Hacer y responder preguntas, Sintonizar)
Presta atención en clase. Respeta tanto al profesor como a tus compañeros de clase cuando hablen. Da respeto para obtener respeto.
Levanta una mano para hablar en clase. ¡Nunca grites!
La fecha siempre está en el pizarrón, al igual que la tarea.
Corregir a tus compañeros cuando responden no es tu trabajo. Ese es nuestro trabajo como maestros. Estamos aquí para aprender, no para ser perfecto.
Cuando sea su turno de contribuir a las discusiones en clase, use ACCOUNTABLE TALK.
Los asientos y grupos a menudo se cambian. No tiene que gustarle a sus compañeros de clase pero debe ser profesional y respetuoso todos los días. ¡Se espera que haga su trabajo!
¡Las personas exitosas no se quejan! Prepárese para el éxito al aceptar desafíos.
Nivel de ruido
Los profesores le informarán el nivel de ruido apropiado antes de cualquier tarea y se publicará en la pizarra. Los cuatro niveles de ruido posibles son los siguientes:
0 = Silencio
1 = Susurrando a un vecino
2 = Conversación dentro de tu grupo
3 = Dirigiéndose a toda la clase
Visitas al baño durante clase
No puede usar el baño durante los primeros 10 minutos y los últimos 10 minutos de un período de clase. Durante el tiempo apropiado, puede usar el baño usando el siguiente procedimiento:
Levanta el puño, usando la señal del lenguaje de signos para el baño
Después de ser reconocido por un maestro, firma tu nombre en el libro de registro del estudiante.
Tome el pase de clase antes de salir del aula.
Al regresar, coloque el pase de clase en su lugar y vuelva a firmar el libro de registro del alumno.
Descanso para ir a tomar agua
No puede salir del aula por agua durante los primeros 10 minutos y los últimos 10 minutos de un período de clase. Durante el tiempo apropiado, puede beber agua usando el siguiente procedimiento:
Levante 3 dedos (haciendo una W)
Después de ser reconocido por un maestro, firme en el libro de registro del estudiante.
Tome el pase de clase antes de salir del aula.
Al regresar, coloque el pase de clase en su lugar y vuelva a firmar usando el libro de registro del alumno.
Como se indicó anteriormente, solo se permite salir a un alumno a la vez, y el registro de alumno se controlará a diario para garantizar que los alumnos no permanezcan fuera más de lo necesario.
Entrada al salon de clases
En los pasillos, deben permanecer en un nivel 0 (silencio). Al ingresar al salón de clases, puede hablar en un nivel 1 (susurro) mientras reúne sus pertenencias y se prepara para la lección del día:
Reduzca su nivel de ruido a 1.
Coloque su mochila en el respaldo de su silla.
Saca los materiales de tu clase y completa el Do Now.
Tirar la basura
Si tiene basura, quédate con ella hasta el final de la clase o hasta que trabaje de forma independiente. Se reservará tiempo para tirar cualquier basura al bote de basura al final del período.
Ayuda extra
Si se siente confundido o inseguro sobre un tema específico, consulte a uno de sus maestros de ELA. Estaremos más que encantados de ayudarle.
Asistencia a clase
Se espera que esté en clase y en su asiento a tiempo con todos los materiales todos los días. Es su responsabilidad ver a uno de sus maestros después de una ausencia para recuperar la información que perdió y enviar todas las tareas perdidas. Si está ausente, tendrá una noche extra para completar la clase y las asignaciones de tareas para obtener un crédito completo. Si está ausente por un período prolongado de tiempo, trabajaremos en colaboración para que estes al dia.
Salida del aula
El maestro le indicará cuándo es el momento de prepararse para el despido. Una clase está lista para partir cuando se cumplan los siguientes criterios:
Los escritorios son rectos y las sillas están metidas.
No queda basura cerca de su área de trabajo.
Las pertenencias personales y el trabajo de clase se guardan.
Todas las asignaciones / trabajos para ese dia se entregan.
El nivel de ruido está en 0.
